This made me go to my books to see who of the old timers it looks like. This is very well done and has the look of impressionist from Europe. It's your own Susan, but in the spirit of that time. You should be proud of this.

Susan Esbensen replied:

Thank you Jim. It was not what I initially intended, but I do like the outcome. Its dark, abstracted nature!

Artist's Description

"Bread and Circuses." A modern day visual parable. Since the days of Rome, and the Roman Satirical poet Juvenal (circa 100) the phrase "bread and circuses" was coined in Satire X. The culture of small distractions of leisure activity has been optimized. The focus has been not merely in satisfying the immediate shallow requirements of a populace but as a guise to drawing attention away from what is really going on in the world. There of course is a profit in all of this.

"Amusement has become an extension of labor under late capitalism." Horkheimer, Max; Adorno, Theodor W: Dialektik der Aufklarung Philosphische Fragmente. Frankfurt am Main: Fischer Verlag 16th edition, 2006.

About Susan Esbensen

Susan Esbensen

Deep within my spirit lies the need to express myself. Through my art I am able to continue this process and strive for ways to improve my craft. My paintings are a contemporary fusion. I allow them to go in a number of directions from loose, to a more representational style. Not easily classified, my art embodies aspects of Abstract, Expressionism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. A true reflection of my own multi-dimensional nature. Each painting I do is a little different from the last. The mood of the color scheme, the under-painting, my emotional input, my reaction to the world around me at that time, the soul and the drama of the subject, whether real or imagined creates a unique vision. I have...
