Powerful image!! I too have used the lady, to express my feelings about the state of affairs . This painting uses many symbols of peace but shows the opposite result. F/L

Susan Esbensen replied:

I really appreciate your comment Susan! I specifically painted this for the 'Against All Odds' exhibition honoring the life of Paul Robeson. Opening tonight at the Trenton City Museum, at the Ellarslie Mansion.

I love the bold design...which first caught my eye...but there is so much more here, isn't there! I have been wanting to do a Liberty in Army Boots for a long time but it hasn't quite jelled in my head yet let alone found its way our through my hands....

Susan Esbensen replied:

I hear you Betty! I often have ideas, that do not coalesce into a tangible image. Or other times, they shape shift as I paint and transform into something entirely different from what I imagined..

Oh my--this is a powerful image and I admit I am partial to the concept. My children's series is all about freedom, liberty etc. and there is a somber underside much like your powerful painting. This is a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and wish you a happy Fourth of July! Lovely and beautiful as ever

Susan Esbensen replied:

Thank you for the supportive and outstanding comment Reynold! . Have a happy 4th of July and continue to teach the liberty story through your own beautiful and powerful work!

What a powerful expression, every bit as resonant today as during Paul Robeson's lifetime. His words and this incredible painting give strength and hope in the never-ending struggle for justice and freedom. fav

Susan Esbensen replied:

Dawn thank you so much for such a well thought out response! I appreciate the recognition of my painting as an expression of the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom for all. And as a tribute to the life long work of Paul Robeson.

Artist's Description

The condition of liberty. A reflection of our state of mind.

A visual allegory for our time.

"Every artist, every scientist, must decide now where he stands. He has no alternative. There is no standing above the conflict on Olympian heights. There are no impartial observers. Through the destruction, in certain countries, of the greatest of man's literary heritage, through the propagation of false ideas of racial and national superiority, the artist, the scientist, the writer is challenged. The struggle invades the formerly cloistered halls of our universities, and other seats of learning. The battlefront is everywhere. There is no sheltered rear." Paul Robeson, The Whole World in His Hands

THE TRENTON CITY MUSEUM AT ELLARSLIE MANSION
'AGAINST ALL ODDS,' INSPIRED BY PAUL ROBESON.

The Paul Robeson House of Princeton

About Susan Esbensen

Susan Esbensen

Deep within my spirit lies the need to express myself. Through my art I am able to continue this process and strive for ways to improve my craft. My paintings are a contemporary fusion. I allow them to go in a number of directions from loose, to a more representational style. Not easily classified, my art embodies aspects of Abstract, Expressionism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. A true reflection of my own multi-dimensional nature. Each painting I do is a little different from the last. The mood of the color scheme, the under-painting, my emotional input, my reaction to the world around me at that time, the soul and the drama of the subject, whether real or imagined creates a unique vision. I have...
