About Susan Esbensen

Susan Esbensen SUSAN A. ESBENSEN
I have been a closet painter for more than thirty years, with some intermissions along the way. On a fluke I entered a juried show back in the early 1990s at the Annex Art Gallery at Historic Smithville Mansion. My oil painting, a still life was awarded a second place ribbon.
I am inspired by nature and by my daily life experiences. I spend many hours riding my horse Sarge cross country just taking in the sights and experiencing nature. These daily visual experiences provide for an infinite well spring of inspiration to draw from.
I will often begin a new painting by applying a layered symphony of color to a canvas. This spontaneous painting process allows my intuitive and subconscious mind an opportunity to create pigments of my imagination from the variations and interactions. On other occasions an experience, a landscape, a current event or an emotion that needs expression finds an outlet through my paintings.
I consider my painting style a contemporary fusion of many styles. I have internalized the notion of discovery in the process to keep things interesting and exciting. I use an expressive palette to capture the sweep and intensity of my subject. I use subtle detail, atmosphere, light, and line as the teller of a scene.
I am a self-taught artist. As a college student at Kean College (now Kean University), I took a concentration of classes in Visual Communications. I had the opportunity to take classes with several prominent artists and faculty, including W. Carl Burger and James Howe. I served a term as vice president of FASA, the Fine Arts Student Association. Recent classes include a painting class with Ruth Anderson, a faculty member at the Michener Museum in Doylestown, and a mixed media class with artist Stacie Speer Scott. Recently I had the opportunity to be mentored by the Irish-American Artist Tighe Odonoghue-Ross.
