The condition of liberty. A reflection of our state of mind.
A visual allegory for our time.
"Every artist, every scientist, must decide now where he stands. He has no alternative. There is no standing above the conflict on Olympian heights. There are no impartial observers. Through the destruction, in certain countries, of the greatest of man's literary heritage, through the propagation of false ideas of racial and national superiority, the artist, the scientist, the writer is challenged. The struggle invades the formerly cloistered halls of our universities, and other seats of learning. The battlefront is everywhere. There is no sheltered rear." Deep within my spirit lies the need to express myself. Through my art I am able to continue this process and strive for ways to improve my craft. My paintings are a contemporary fusion. Each painting I do is a little different from the last. The mood of the color scheme, the under-painting, my emotional input, my reaction to the world around me at that time, the soul and the drama of the subject, whether real or imagined creates a unique vision. I love the bold design...which first caught my eye...but there is so much more here, isn't there! I have been wanting to do a Liberty in Army Boots for a long time but it hasn't quite jelled in my head yet let alone found its way our through my hands....
Susan Esbensen replied:
I hear you Betty! I often have ideas, that do not coalesce into a tangible image. Or other times, they shape shift as I paint and transform into something entirely different from what I imagined..
